Emily’s Favorite Things: Socks
Runners often obsess over finding the glass slipper of running shoes that perfectly fits their foot. We observe and critique the feel of each step to dial in on the brand, heel drop, upper material, and cushion that fits our feet best. But what we often overlook is the very thing between our feet and that shoe we spent time and money to find — the sock. What may seem like a minor detail, wearing the wrong sock can lead to big problems and cause havoc to your training cycle. Material, cushioning, compression, ventilation, and height are all factors that go into creating the perfect sock to minimize moisture and prevent formation of blisters in your feet.
Just like running shoes, there are a plethora of sock brands and styles to choose from, so I’ve rounded up some of my favorites for you — routinely tested against all weather elements and running workouts by yours truly.
Under Armour Adult Run No Show Tab Sock: This is a basic, no frills option from UA but is my go-to for every run. These socks feel compressive, lightweight, and have a solid sweat-wicking technology. My favorite feature is the heel tab, which allows me to wear these socks with all different shoe styles without bothering my heel or ankle.
NEW Bandit Quarter Current Sock: These socks are part of Bandit Running’s most recent drop 001, and they are certainly worth the hype. Featuring a cotton/spandex material labeled Coolmax and targeted cushioning zones, these socks feel supportive yet plush in all of the right places without feeling too heavy. The quarter current sock is also the goldilocks of sock heights - shorter than a calf sock yet higher than a no show to provide lightweight coverage around the ankle and lower calf.
Lululemon Daily Stride Mid Crew Sock: Did you know that the L/R foot labels on running socks actually matters? These Lululemon socks have anatomically-shaped toes that keep each foot in mind, meaning the sock is specifically engineered to fit the indicated foot. The stride mid crew also stays in place throughout all of my weekend long runs, which is a big selling point for me. The icing on the cake? The colors are on point.
Nike Everyday Plus Sock in Tie Dye: You can’t go wrong with a staple like the Nike crew sock, featuring target cushioning, Dri-FIT technology, and strategically placed ventilation to keep your foot feeling cool and supported through every workout. The perfect spin on this classic is the tie-dye combo featuring both neutral and bold color options!
Bombas Women's Lightweight Performance Running Ankle Socks: These no shows are a newer addition to my sock collection and I’ve been thoroughly impressed with their performance. At first feel, I noticed the targeting cushioning and the arch support of the midfoot compression. I love how this sock features all the right components while also keeping really lightweight and moisture wicking for those hot summer runs.
